HOW DOES MY PAPER GET TO ME ?
Each morning Gardenvale Newsagency deliver over 1000 newspapers to residential customers
in Brighton, Elsternwick and South Caulfield. On a Saturday the number of home delivered
papers increases to more than 1800 when one factors in that Saturday's Age comes
in two parts.
Our first staff member arrives at 3.30 am each morning to open the shop and receive
the day's supply of newspapers and magazines. He then counts out the number of papers
for home delivery, those papers for our subagents and sets out the remainder for
shop sales.
NEWSPAPER WRAPPING.
Newspapers donot come pre-wrapped. At 4.00am our newspaper wrapper arrives and manually
feeds each paper into our wrapping machine ready for home delivery. If you are an
experienced wrapper you can wrap around 800 weekday papers an hour. The thicker
newspapers, such as those that are delivered on the weekend, take a bit longer to
wrap.
NEWSPAPER DELIVERY STAFF
Our paper delivery staff commence work from 5am onwards and have usually finished
their day’s work by 6.30am each weekday. On weekends deliveries should be complete
by 7.30am. [Saturday's and Sunday's are a little later as the papers are bulkier,
take longer to wrap and are harder to throw from the car]. Each delivery round takes
approxminately one hour to complete. Newspaper delivery staff usually work 6 days
a week [Monday to Saturday], although some staff job share. A different crew deliver
on Sundays.
PAPERBOYS/GIRLS
Sadly the days of paperboys and girls is almost a memory. It has become increasingly
difficult to find young folk who are prepared to do the early morning starts, whilst
changes in employment laws for boys & girls under 13years of age are such that
they are no longer allowed to work before sunrise.
LATE PAPERS
From time to time, hopefully infrequently, your paper may arrive later than usual.
The newspapers are scheduled to arrive at our premises at 3.30 am for wrapping.
We can usually still get them to our home delivery customers on time provided they
arrive before 4.30am. However when our supplies arrive after 4.30am, the time taken
to wrap papers and load delivery vehicles means that our home delivery times may
"slip" on these occasions.
MISSED PAPERS
On occasion a paper can go missing. It may be that it has been stolen [ yes we have
staked out houses & caught folk pinching a paper on the way to work or on their
early morning walk].Alternatively our driver may have made an error [we aim to make
no errors but realistically know that we have on average an error rate of one quarter
of one percent. Over a 1000 newspapers per morning this equates 2.5 misses a day].
Whatever the cause, we will happily provide a replacement paper provided we are
notified prior to 9.45am on the morning of delivery. Papers notified after 9.45am
are not replaced.
